Life rarely turns out like we planned. Does that mean we give up hope? Not on your life! Even in the midst of what looks like hopeless circumstances, there is an unswerving hope that can be shaken, battered and bruised, but never completely wiped away. This is the story of my daily faith walk. If you have found yourself in a hopeless place, please join me and let's take this journey together--the journey in search of unswerving hope.

Light and Power
Ephesians 1:15-23
Light. I love light. I love that darkness cannot remain in its presence. I love the thought of my heart being flooded with it (as the NLT says in Ephesians.) The flooding means that it washes into every crack and crevice. It washes into my brokenness. It runs like a river through my heart, washing away the darkness. It doesn't "fix" the cracks. They don't go away, but they're no longer dark, hidden, scary.
And here's what it reveals: a confident hope, holiness, a rich and glorious inheritance. My holiness?! What? Really? Me... holy? YES! He has made me holy. He has made you holy if you are in Christ. We are a holy people. We have an inheritance in Him. But this isn't talking about our inheritance... it talks about His inheritance... US! WE are the inheritance. We are the treasure. We are His inheritance--His rich and glorious inheritance! What?! Me? Us? But we're such a mess! We bicker and fight. We compare and compete. We "friend" and "unfriend" one another at the drop of a hat.
Oh Lord, flood our hearts with Your light so that we can understand... so that we will have the confident hope that we are Your holy people--set apart by You--that we are Your inheritance--Your rich and glorious inheritance--Your treasure.
Maybe once we have that understanding, we'll quit bickering and fighting, comparing and competing, friending and unfriending. Flood our hearts, Lord.
And here's the key--we somehow think that this holiness thing is up to us--that we need to make ourselves holy. Goodness, if we could do that Jesus wouldn't have had to die! There is only one way we can become holy--by the power that raised Christ from the dead. Not only that, but it also seated Him the the place of honor at God's right hand. Now He reigns with authority! Sometimes it may not feel like it because He seems to allow things that I wouldn't allow if I were in charge. But I am not in charge, and we can all be thankful for that! I'd be more like Bruce Almighty and I'd make a mess of things.
So, instead of trying to be good, instead of trying to control everything and everyone, I'll seek that Light to flood my heart--to give me an understanding of the power that raised Christ from the dead--and maybe, just maybe, I'll start living more like the treasure--the inheritance that God's Word says I am!

How Important is The Book
We just watched “The Book of Eli” last weekend. Wow.
I need to add a disclaimer here that there is lots of
violence and not for the faint of heart, but wow.
Denzel Washington plays the part of Eli, and he is traveling
by foot through the desolate wasteland of what’s left of the United States in the year 2044. His
only instruction, given by a voice from deep inside him, is to go West. In his backpack, Eli carries a book—a large,
black King James Version of the Bible. He defends this book with his life. He
fights for it, suffers for it.
The villain in the movie wants the book desperately. He too
fights for it and suffers for it, and causes others to suffer for it. He will stop at nothing to get the book. He
tells his cohorts that it’s a weapon. He finally catches up with Eli, shoots
him, and gets the book. He takes it back to his lair, unable to open it because
of the lock that holds it closed. He watches as his locksmith works to open the
book. He is feverish (from an infected injury) and nearly hysterical as he
waits to open the book.
I don’t want to give away the coolest parts of the movie in
case you want to check it out. But, wow, if only we desired the word, realized
its power, and were willing to give anything to get it in our hearts and minds
as the characters in the movie are! We have become so complacent. I couldn’t
even tell you how many Bibles I have in my home. Many of you are the same, I’m
sure. We have Bibles everywhere—on our Kindles, on our smart phones, iPods and
computers, on the Internet, and even some hard copies in multiple versions,
paraphrases and languages. Eli carries with him the only remaining copy.
After watching The Book of Eli, my desire to read and
memorize The Word has been renewed. Am I willing to walk for 30 years? Am I
willing to suffer and fight for it? Am I willing to give my life for it? Am I
even willing to experience some discomfort for it? Am I willing to spend time reading and memorizing it? I better be because it is
life, it is power, it is truth.

I Want to Know God's Heart
I want to know Your heart, God. I have to know Your heart. I
want to pray prayers that thrill Your heart. I want to pray prayers that please
You… not prayers to bless me… I am already so blessed I can hardly see
straight. I’m weary of my superficial prayers, and I sense that You are too. I’m
bored with my prayers that must make You yawn as well.
I know there is a different way to pray and I want to find
it! I want to find power in prayer. I want my prayers to take me into Your very
throne room. You sacrificed Your son just so I could have that privilege, and
yet I sit here and pray lazy, shallow prayers that require no faith. They
involve no risk. Who would know if they ever got answered or not because they
are so vague. Lord, I want to know Your heart!
Lord, the needs are so great. Help me today as I press in
close to You… close to Your heart. Help me to pray the prayer that thrills You
today.
